Post-Arthroscopic Glenohumeral Chondrolysis

Post-Arthroscopic Glenohumeral Chondrolysis (PAGCL): Painful and Permanent Damage to Shoulder Cartilage

The use of intra-articular pain pumps following arthroscopic shoulder surgery is a known cause of a painful injury called post-arthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis (PAGCL). The injury, which is thought to be caused by high concentrations of potent pain medications applied directly to the shoulder joint, can cause persistent pain, weakness, and a loss of range of motion in the shoulder. PAGCL can develop as early as two months after surgery or up to one year following the arthroscopic procedure.

Patients who have undergone arthroscopic shoulder surgery followed by the use of an intra-articular pain pump are more at risk of developing PAGCL. If you or a loved one is experiencing the symptoms of PAGCL after undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery, you may be entitled to compensation for your medical bills, pain and suffering, lost income, and other damages. What is PAGCL?

Post-arthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis, also referred to as PAGCL, is an injury to cartilage in the joints and most commonly affects the shoulders, knees, hips, wrists, and elbows. The injury is progressive and can worsen over time, causing worsening pain, loss of range of motion, and weakness in the affected joint.

What Causes PAGCL?

Medical researchers have said that the use of intra-articular pain pumps in the treatment of pain following arthroscopic surgery is a cause of PAGCL. It is suspected that the high concentration of potent pain killing drugs directly in the joint can, over time, break down the cartilage in the joint, allowing the bones to bump and rub together and cause pain.

Is PAGCL Treatable?

Patients diagnosed with PAGCL most often must undergo additional surgery to repair the damage. However, even after additional surgeries are performed in an effort to correct the damage, many PAGCL patients report suffering continued shoulder pain caused by the pain pump implanted during the initial surgery.
